My husband is a big board game fanatic. We have a lot of strategy and cooperative games, but that are also party games and easy to learn and play quickly. Target has a current promotion for buy 2 get 1 game free (until 11/5/16), so I'm going to share the favorites from our house!
Ticket to Ride
This game has won "best of" awards, and comes in the original game, for ages 8 and up. An easy strategy game to follow, you pick colors and build trains. There are bonus cards for connecting certain routes, and the longest train at the end earns bonus points as well. It's fun because you don't know if people completed their "bonus" or not so you can be in the lead at the end, but once all the points are added up you can easily lose. Comes in a junior version, and some other versions that change the location.
Pie Face Showdown
Last year's hit game was Pie Face and this is a new version of that. The original version was fun for kids and adults (disclaimer - only played while drinking). This version is for 5 and up. You pass it around until the unlucky holder gets whip cream in their face. Think of it like a messy hot potato.
Sequence
This is a strategy game combined with a card game. Ages 7 and up and you can play with 2 or more players. You form teams with more players. Easy to learn, you put your chips on corresponding cards you pick to connect 5 together to get a sequence. But there are other moves that allow you to remove and replace chips so it gets a little competitive. In my family we mostly end up mad at our team members for not being able to mind read to help assist in completing a sequence we had planned. There is no table talk so you can't fill in your team member on any plans.
Pandemic
Suggested age for this is 13 year and up. A 2-4 person strategy game. You try to eradicate a disease before it spreads through the world. You work together to come up with the best course of action to get rid of the diseases. By allowing each person to be a different character with special abilities, everyone plays their own part. You either all beat the game together, or you all lose together if the disease spreads. We like this cooperative game and it would be great for teens who want to work together.
Settlers of Catan
12 years and up can enjoy this strategic game where you build your houses and roads along resources. By rolling the dice you earn resources that you trade in to help you build. Simple concept and lots of fun. 2 or more players.
Machi Koro
When my husband bought this I was like no way I'm not learning another game. This has turned out to be my favorite! It's very easy and fun. Ages 10 and up, you collect places and items for your town via cards, which earn you money if the corresponding number is rolled. Use yours in your town and first to flip l over wins. I always win ;)
I hope this list helps if you are considering any of these as gifts. I have a wall of games, if you have any questions on others, leave it in the comments and I'll get back to you.
