It's been a while coming, the living room was due for a makeover. The furniture is from Pottery Barn and had a good 10 year run, but is now full of dings and scratches, since having kids means we can't have anything nice. About two years ago we bought a big cheap sectional because we were not ready to invest in a nice sofa with two little ones, and it's been used as a tumble track moreso than a sofa. We painted about 6 months ago but despite a pinterest board full of ideas, I wasn't making any real progress buying new furniture. I had an idea in my head, but really did not have time to search various websites and try to come up with a cohesive design.
After some googling, I decided to try out Havenly, it's an app that pairs you with a designer to tackle your home design requests. There are a few different packages to pick from, depending on your needs.
I chose the Full Room Design as I wanted to start from scratch. First, I filled out a style profile when I launched my project. You answer some questions (style/budget/if you want to keep anything you have), upload inspiration photos, upload photos of your current space, and also draw out a sketch of the dimensions of your room. It was really easy and fun! After this, your designer takes a look and provides you with a few concepts which you use as a starting point. (PS- you can also select your designer by checking out their past work, otherwise you will be paired based on your style, my designer was Chelsea King)
Here were my three "rustic farmhouse" designs based on my inspiration photos:
You rate each concept and also rate each of the items individually. You can see the prices of each item and where they came from (Pottery Barn, wayfair, Crate and Barrel were main stores for me, if you love a store or brand you can also suggest it!). After the ratings, you narrow it down. I loved a couch from one concept and a coffee table from another. You give all the feedback via the app and rate and mark favorites as well. All items marked as favorites are saved so you can shop easily! You can also chat directly with your sylist in the app or on the website. I also signed up to be alerted via text of any messages (since I'm bad about checking apps). It was really easy to ask questions about the items and the layout. You can also schedule a phone call, which I came down with strep throat at the beginning of this process, so talking on the phone wasn't in the cards for me.
The final concept and a layout based on the space dimensions you provided initially are then sent your way. I was blown away! We went from three ideas, that I picked and chose from, down to one, and it was exactly as I imagined it to be! The designer took my feedback from the style profile to heart as well - with kids and a dog, she found sofas with kid/pet friendly fabrics, a coffee table that has a top that extends to come up higher to eat or play games on, and bookshelf that I can add some baskets to in order to hide small toys and books. And everything matched the paint color I just used on the majority of my house (Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore).
Here is my final concept:

I'm not even mentioning my favorite part - I was so stuck on buying anything. Now seeing it all together, and that it all fits in the space (I did double check and measure out everything and the designer was spot on with the spacing of everything!), I was ready to order. I recommend getting out of the app to place your order and use the website. All the items in your concept appear and you can add them to your cart. Your cart is broken down by supplier and what is amazing (since this is a deal saver website after all!!) is that you can add coupon codes per site all to the one order. So if pottery barn has a free shipping code, you just add that to the section of PB items. I've never ordered from some of these places before so I went to every website and signed up for discounts and I either had a free ship code or a % off. I even got $50 off the sofas! There is also a price match guarantee, and it's so easy to use, each item has a link for price match. If you found the item cheaper somewhere else, you just copy the link in and havenly's website will say yes or no to the price match. No trying to call customer service and beg for discounts, it's all automated and really easy to use. I did have one item that was not price matched, the coffee table, which I found on walmart's website, being offered through the manufacturer. Havenly was not partnered with Walmart and would not honor the price. This was the only item I did not order through Havenly because as much as I want my designer to get every cent of commission, the difference was over $200 and I wasn't going to eat that cost difference.
You will see a total but then each promo code is taken into account when you do your final checkout. As you input the codes it looks like this:
Overall, I'm really happy with this service. I have used a local interior designer in the past and had great results on my deck design and my home office, but it was a little pricier, and since I was doing such a large space I wanted to try and save some money where I could. I liked that I could use promo codes from various stores and place one order, all within my budget! What is great too is that if you need to start and build up, you can. For example, my sofas will take about 6 weeks to come in, so I didn't order all the pillows and decor items yet. I'm going to hold off, maybe keep an eye out for deals. I grabbed all the bigger items and will go back for some of the fillers. I also ordered only one side table, I'm waiting to see the items in my space before I decide if I need a second or if I'll do a console table behind the one sofa. Oh did I mention - this whole process can be done it about a week! I was sick and there was a holiday, so it drug out to about two weeks, but that's on me, the more responsive you are the quicker it moves along.
I only have one con and that is that the app has some drawbacks. You can't rate the concepts or the items in the app, you need to log on the website. So even pulling the website up on your phone helps. I was initially relying on the app I didnt' even realize my designer was waiting on me to rate things until she told me to nudge me along.
The items will take some time to arrive, but I'm so happy I was able to finally pull the trigger and I'm really looking forward to the room coming together over the next month. I hope you enjoyed this review. Leave a comment if you have any questions for me!
What a cool idea for the DIY in all of us. I think it would be a helpful app to have.
